Assisting a widow to declutter her husband’s office

Sunny has a beautiful, VERY organized home. The kind of home an organizer sees and wonders why they’ve been called. As it turned out, Sunny desperately needed us for one particular room. Several years earlier, she had been widowed when the love of her life died suddenly. Her home had always been organized and still was but there was one room that was cluttered and unusable. This room had been her husband’s office and she just couldn’t bring herself to do anything in it. During our Zoom meeting, we had her set up a laptop to show us a particular area and we talked her through what to do with the clutter. As she completed one area, we had her move the laptop to another area and begin work there. During a decluttering session, we typically point out what needs to be done, assign homework, and provide follow-up support. But in this case, we helped Sunny by body doubling. During our Zoom call, she worked in the den and we advised her as needed. Mostly, however, we served as a friend to help her stay on task and make her way through this part of the grieving process. She felt a burden lifted when the room was de-cluttered and re-organized to use in a fresh, new way.
