How I Learned The Best Way To Declutter–STACK it!
As I write this, I’m approaching another birthday. Not an ‘important’ one that ends in a 0 or a 5 but a milestone nonetheless. What’s the milestone? God has given me another year of life and blessings. That’s worth celebrating! His goodness has carried me through 63 years and I trust He will provide me with what is best in my upcoming 64th year.
For over 20 years, I’ve been a professional organizer–a perfect fit for my strengths:
✨ Optimistic – I always believe people can overcome the obstacles that hold them back
✨ Analytical – I see how pieces, people, and events can better fit together to improve life
✨ Compassionate – I delight in helping people learn how to heal and be happy
My decluttering and organizing journey looks like this:
Over The Decades
My 20’s
I was an organized college student but not so much in my first home. I had a junk room—not just a junk drawer. I found, I didn’t like living that way so I began to learn what clutter is, how to control it, and how to organize what remains.
My 30’s
I saw that many of my friends weren’t organized, creating a lot of stress and unhappiness in their homes, marriages, and lives. I started helping a few of them and word got out that I was good at organizing and willing to help. I began to help more and more friends.
My 40’s & 50’s
The skills I acquired in my own home and through helping friends became my business. My clients ranged from special needs people in county programs to very wealthy clients in large homes that weren’t making them happy.
My 60’s
It dawned on me one day that I was getting older every day. (How did I miss this before?) Decluttering is very physical doing it 5-6 hours a day regularly. I could continue for a while longer but knew it wasn’t sustainable. I figured this was the end of professional organizing for me, and was surprised how sad it made me feel. Thinking through this unexpected emotion, I thought, “I know so much and still have a lot to share. I don’t feel done yet.”
Unjumbled was born! I transitioned from on-site decluttering and organizing to virtual organizing. I quickly discovered that not being on-site didn’t hinder my ability to look at a home (via Zoom) to see the challenges/bottlenecks/issues and provide wise, compassionate, practical, and successful guidance. Now I help people all over the US! Win, win, win.
STACK
How I physically connect with clients has changed in the last few years. But my methodology hasn’t. I still teach my time-tested STACK method of decluttering because IT WORKS. Every step is important. The 5 steps taken together give you the peaceful home you want to live in. Every time.
S – Space Insight
Define the PURPOSE of your space. Your space can do one job for you—maybe two. Three tops. Defining purpose and limits creates a home for everything and gives everything a home.
T – Today You
Yesterday You wore 4” heels. Today You would die a thousand deaths attempting this. Today You hits the gym twice a week (on a good week) and doesn’t need 7 workout outfits. Why is Today You keeping all the stuff?
A – Align & Achieve
Today You meet Space Insight. Space Insight will tell you what’s happening in each space and Today You tells Space Insight what fits you best (literally, when it comes to your closet) these days.
C – Clutter Cleared
This is where you thought the starting point was, right? Surprise! It’s actually #4. But a strong #4. This is where we kick clutter to the curb (and the thrift store).
K – Keepin’ It Great
I haven’t done my job if I don’t teach you how to keep the clutter from coming back. I always do my job.
The Moral
🌷 Be thankful for the gifts God has given you and develop them.
🌷 Use your gifts to help yourself and others.
🌷 Figure out what works and stick to it.
🌷 Know your limits and when it’s time to make a change or ask for help.
🌷 Yesterday You, make room for Today You. The best is yet to come!
