7 Small Rewards To Help You Reach Your Decluttering Goals

7 Small Rewards To Help You Reach Your Decluttering Goals

Decluttering can seem daunting. Where do you start? What do you do once you start? I could write a book on the subject (maybe someday???) but let’s look at some small steps that will give you big results . . . and you can start today.

Small Steps To Make Decluttering More Manageable

Start Small: Begin with a specific area, like a drawer, shelf, or a single room. Tackle one small section at a time rather than trying to declutter an entire space in one go.

Define The Purpose of the Space You’re Working On: Anything that doesn’t fit the exact purpose you defined doesn’t belong there—give it away, throw it away, or move it to the place in your home where it does belong.

Use a Timer: Set a timer for short decluttering sessions, even 10-15 minutes is enough (don’t exceed 30 minutes). Working in short bursts is far less overwhelming.

Reward Yourself: Celebrate your progress after each session. Rewards are very motivational.

Reward? Did you say “reward”? Let’s talk about that!

Why Small Rewards Matter

Our brains crave positive reinforcement. Small rewards are powerful motivators to keep us engaged and excited about our goals. They offer a sense of accomplishment and encouragement that helps us keep going when we don’t feel like it.

Seven Examples of Small Rewards

Keep in mind that rewards can be enjoyed WHILE you work as well as after you finish the work.

1. 10-Minute Break with Your Favorite Beverage: Sort for 10 minutes and then take a 10-minute break (it’s a great time to do your daily devotional!), and then finish with 10 more minutes of decluttering. In 30 minutes you’ll have decluttered AND re-charged!

2. Read a Great Book: Treat yourself to a chapter of a book you’ve been eager to read. Be honest . . . how many times do you let yourself just read during the day? NOW you have a great excuse!

3. Listen to Your Favorite Podcast: Reserve a favorite podcast for listening to ONLY as you declutter. Super motivational.

4. Aromatherapy Break: Light a scented candle or use essential oils to create a soothing atmosphere. Enjoy the aromatic bliss as you tidy up a specific area.

5. Phone Call with a Loved One: Reach out to a friend or family member. Take a break to connect, share stories, and lift your spirits. You can even share what you’ve just accomplished during decluttering and how excited you are about it.

6. Mindful Stretching or Short Exercise: Engage in a brief stretching routine or a short exercise session. Will this get you ready to run the Boston Marathon? No. But is it more exercise than you’re currently getting? Yes? Score!

7. Treat Yourself to a Healthy Snack: Indulge in a healthy and tasty snack as a reward. Whether it’s a piece of dark chocolate, some fruits, or a handful of nuts, savor the moment guilt-free.

The Impact of Small Rewards

Integrating small rewards into your decluttering routine can help break down the enormity of the task into manageable chunks, making it easier to stay focused and maintain momentum. Rewards also create a positive association with decluttering so what could be a chore turns into a time of self-care and accomplishment.

Finding Your Own Rewards

These examples are a starting point, but consider what genuinely brings you joy and motivation. Whether it’s listening to your favorite music, engaging in a creative activity, or simply taking a moment to bask in newfound orderliness, tailor your rewards to suit your preferences.
